Making a Scene: the Jefferson Place, American University
Washington, DC, 2017

Founded in 1957, this exhibition featured paintings and sculptures by the initial 11 member-artists of the Jefferson Place Gallery—George Bayliss, Lothar Brabanski, William Calfee, Robert Gates, Colin Greenly, Leonard Maurer, Helene McKinsey Herzbrun, Kenneth Noland, Mary Orwen, Shelby Shackelford, and Joe Summerford—as well as other artists that exhibited at The Jefferson Place Gallery’s during its first five years: Robert d’Arista, Elmer Bischoff, Gene Davis, Tom Downing, Max Elias, Robert Goodnough, Patrick Heron, Jacob Kainen, Fred Maroon, Howard Mehring, Claire Falkenstein, David Park, Hilda Shapiro Thorpe, Frederic Thursz, and Jack Tworkov.

Painting into Sculpture, Marlboro Gallery, Prince George’s Community College

While beginning students are confined to the rectangle, this exhibition explored more sculptural approaches and qualities within contemporary painting practices. The exhibition included the works of Dennis Dake, Don Kimes, J.T. Kirkland, Eugene Markowski, Donald Martiny, Kris Scheifele, and Dan Tulk.

Drawing Perspectives, Marlboro Gallery, Prince George’s Community College

The exhibition exposed students to a variety of drawing materials and approaches—from traditional to kinetic. Included in the exhibition were the works of Scott Barnes, Christian Benefiel, Mei Mei Chang, Ben Claassen III, Billy Friebele, Amy Lin, Dana Jeri Maier, Paul Pietsch, Tom Raneses, Geoff Stein, Jessika Tarr, Jessica Van Brakle, Elijah van Benschoten, and Nathan Wallace.
